Allesandra is 7 months old and weighs a mere 7 kg. Her congenital heart defect weakens her little body and when she eats, the stress of the feeding is too much effort for her. Her lungs are full of fluid because of the defect and the combination of these two means that she just can't eat very much. Without surgery, she will go into heart failure within months. Allessandra's mom has spent half of what she makes on the doctor bills to try to help her only baby, so when she heard about a team of doctors traveling to San Pedro Sula to help kids with heart problems, it was an answer to her prayers.
CardioStart International and Helping Hands Honduras team up to bring pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, and nursing experts to this region of Honduras where these services are just not available. This team of ordinary people with extraordinary compassion transform into super heroes and treat as many kids as they can during the two week mission.
Little Allessandra received a surgical correction for her PDA through a tiny little incision through her ribs, and based on the expert opinion of the doctors she will have zero long-term effects from the defect. All of her mom's hopes and dreams for her baby girl can now come true.
This work is not possible without donations from corporate grants and regular people like you and me. Please consider giving, so that these amazing teams can help more babies like Allessandra.
